Choosing Delivery & Pickup Options

Delivery vs in-person pickup: which is right for your sale?

Written by Austin Headley

How Will Your Buyer Get the Item?

When creating a listing, you choose how buyers can receive their purchase. Understanding your options helps you make the right choice.

Your Options

Courier Delivery

Our verified couriers handle everything:

  • A courier comes to you for pickup during delivery hours

  • Delivers directly to the buyer

  • Tracked delivery from pickup to drop-off

  • Your buyer never sees your address

In-Person Pickup

You meet the buyer directly:

  • Let buyers book from your pickup availability, or coordinate by message

  • Offer any combination of your home, police safe-trade zones, or your own public pickup spots, picked per listing

  • Hand over the item in person

  • Payment is still protected through ShopBroker

Offer Both

Let buyers choose their preference. This gives flexibility and can lead to faster sales.

When to Choose Delivery

Great for:

  • High-value items (electronics, luxury goods)

  • Sellers who prefer not to meet strangers

  • Items within weight and size limits

  • Buyers in the delivery service area

Benefits:

  • No personal meetups required

  • Professional handling

  • Tracked courier transport

  • Delivery confirmation

Considerations:

  • A courier collects your item during its scheduled window, so just have it packed and ready

  • Item must fit size/weight limits

  • Buyer pays delivery fee

When to Choose In-Person Pickup

Great for:

  • Large or heavy items

  • Local sales with nearby buyers

  • Items outside delivery zones

  • Flexible scheduling

Benefits:

  • No delivery fee for buyer

  • Can happen on your schedule

  • Works for any item size

  • Buyer can inspect before completing purchase

Considerations:

  • You handle the handoff yourself

  • You need pickup hours and pickup spots that you can actually support

Setting Up Delivery

When courier delivery is enabled on your account and a buyer purchases your item:

You receive a notification

On your transaction page, tap Create Shipment to generate the label

Pack the item securely and attach the label

Keep it ready so the courier can collect it during the pickup window

For most orders, that's it. The courier collects your item automatically during its scheduled window, so there is no extra button to tap.

The exact pickup depends on the courier tier booked for that order. You'll see which one on your transaction page.

  • Everyday Delivery (scheduled): A courier arrives at your address between 9am and 3pm the next business day after you create the shipment, then delivers to the buyer the same day. This covers most orders.

  • Next-Day Delivery: On some shorter Toronto routes, the courier collects and delivers the next day. This is the cheapest option on those routes.

  • Direct Delivery (on-demand): The premium, same-day option, where a courier arrives in about 2 hours. This is rare. When an order is Direct, a Ready for Pickup button appears on your transaction page. Tap it when you're set and a courier is dispatched right away. For Everyday and Next-Day orders, that button does not appear, so there is nothing extra to do.

How the Courier Tier Is Chosen

You don't choose the courier tier, and neither does the buyer. ShopBroker automatically books the cheapest courier option for the route. Most orders ship as scheduled Everyday delivery, some nearby orders ship Next-Day, and same-day Direct is a rare premium exception. Courier delivery is available whenever it's enabled on your account.

Rate Changes After Checkout

If the delivery rate has changed since checkout, you'll see the updated rate before confirming. Rate decreases are applied automatically and the buyer is refunded the difference. Rate increases are shown to you for acknowledgment, and the difference comes from your payout so the buyer is never charged more.

Setting Up In-Person Pickup

When you enable in-person pickup:

Set your pickup availability in My Shop > Availability

Manage your master list of pickup spots in My Shop > Settings > Pickup spots

When creating or editing a listing, open the Pickup spots for buyers picker and check the spots you want to offer on that specific listing. Your home, police safe-trade zones, and custom public spots all appear as toggleable rows. None of them are required individually, the listing just needs at least one spot saved.

After payment is secured, the buyer books a time and pickup spot, or you coordinate by message if scheduling is not available

Buyer confirms receipt to release payment

Existing listings keep the pickup spots that were saved with them. If you update your defaults later, edit the listing and use Pull latest from settings to refresh that listing's saved spots.

Tips for Each Option

For Delivery

  • Package items securely

  • Have your item packed and ready for the courier's scheduled pickup window

  • Provide clear pickup instructions (apartment buzzer, etc.)

  • Include any accessories/cables with the item

For In-Person Pickup

  • Meet in public, well-lit places

  • Enable police safe-trade zones or other public pickup spots when they make sense

  • Bring a friend if you'd like

  • Have the item ready to show

  • Test electronics together if applicable

Changing After Listing

You can update delivery and pickup options anytime before a sale:

Open your listing

Edit delivery and pickup settings

Save changes

Once a buyer has checked out, the delivery and pickup method for that order is locked.

What Most Sellers Do

Many sellers offer both options to maximize their buyer pool. Buyers appreciate choice, and it often leads to faster sales.
