My Payment Failed

Common reasons payments fail and how to fix them

Written by Austin Headley

Payment Didn't Go Through?

Don't worry, this is usually easy to fix. Here are the most common reasons and solutions.

Common Causes

1. Insufficient Funds

Your card may not have enough available balance to cover the purchase.

Fix: Check your balance and try again, or use a different card.

2. Card Declined by Bank

Your bank may have blocked the transaction for security reasons.

Fix: Call your bank to authorize the purchase, then try again.

3. Incorrect Card Details

A typo in your card number, expiry date, or CVV can cause failures.

Fix: Double-check all details and re-enter carefully.

4. Expired Card

Cards past their expiry date won't process.

Fix: Use a current card.

5. International Transaction Block

Some cards block international transactions, and your bank may flag our payment processor as international.

Fix: Call your bank to enable international purchases.

6. Daily Limit Reached

Your card may have a daily spending limit.

Fix: Wait until tomorrow or contact your bank to increase the limit.

If Your Bank Asks You to Verify the Purchase

Some Canadian banks add an extra verification step (often called 3D Secure or "Verified by Visa") before approving an online purchase. If your bank asks you to confirm the charge through a code, push notification, or biometric prompt, complete that step and you'll be returned to your order automatically.

On the ShopBroker mobile app, this happens right inside the app, so you don't need to switch to a browser. If you cancel or dismiss the verification, the payment won't go through and you can try again.

Quick Fixes to Try

Double-check your card details. Even one wrong digit causes failure.

Try a different card. Debit, credit, or another card entirely.

Clear your browser. Sometimes cached data causes issues.

Try incognito mode. This rules out browser extension problems.

Was I Charged?

If your payment failed, you shouldn't be charged. However, you might see:

  • Pending authorization: this typically drops off after a few days, depending on your bank

  • Multiple pending charges: multiple attempts may show temporarily

These aren't real charges and will disappear. If you do see a charge that didn't result in an order, see I Was Charged But My Order Didn't Complete.
