Accepted Payment Methods

How you can pay for purchases on ShopBroker

Written by Austin Headley

How to Pay on ShopBroker

We accept several payment methods to make checkout easy and secure. The available options depend on which provider the seller has connected.

PayPal

If the seller has PayPal connected, you'll see PayPal at checkout. You can:

  • Pay with your PayPal balance

  • Pay with any credit or debit card linked to PayPal

  • Use guest checkout (no PayPal account needed) with a credit or debit card

PayPal payments include PayPal's Buyer Protection on eligible transactions, on top of ShopBroker's protection.

For more, see Paying with PayPal.

Credit and Debit Cards (Stripe)

If the seller has Stripe connected, you'll see a credit and debit card form at checkout. We accept:

  • Visa

  • Mastercard

  • American Express

Your card details are processed securely through Stripe; we never store your full card number.

Paying in Person: Cash or Interac e-Transfer

Some sellers also let you pay in person when you pick up your item, either with cash or an Interac e-Transfer you send from your own bank. You'll see these options at checkout when the seller offers them for pickup.

Here's the important part: these payments go straight to the seller. ShopBroker doesn't hold, send, or handle the money for cash or Interac e-Transfer, so the protections from secure online payment don't apply. There's no held payment, no chargeback through ShopBroker, and no ShopBroker Promise on these orders.

If something comes up, you can still report a problem and we'll help you sort it out, but we can't refund or recover the money for this kind of payment. Card and PayPal payments stay protected.

The first time you pick cash or e-Transfer, we'll ask you to confirm you understand how it works. For the full walkthrough, see Paying in Person with Cash or Interac e-Transfer.

What You'll See at Checkout

The checkout page shows the payment options the seller's active provider supports. You won't need to guess; just pick from what's available.

If the seller has both PayPal and Stripe connected, you'll see whichever one they've set as their active provider. Sellers can switch their active provider, so if you've checked out with one before and now see the other, that's why.

Payment Security

When you pay with a card or PayPal, your payment is protected:

  • Encrypted transactions: Your payment details are secured with industry-standard encryption

  • No charges until delivery: We authorize (hold) your payment, but don't capture it until you receive your item

  • Fraud protection: Our payment processors monitor for suspicious activity

Why Pre-Authorization?

When you check out, we place a hold on your payment method for the order total. This:

  • Confirms you have available funds

  • Ensures the seller gets paid when they deliver

  • Protects you if something goes wrong

The actual charge happens only after successful delivery or when you confirm pickup.

Currency

All transactions on ShopBroker are in Canadian Dollars (CAD).

Common Questions

Can I split payment between methods?

Not at this time. You'll need to complete your purchase with a single payment method.

Is my payment information saved?

No. Just enter your payment info each time you check out. It stays secure because PayPal or Stripe processes the payment directly without saving your card on our platform.

Can I pay with cash?

Sometimes. If the seller offers it for in-person pickup, you can pay with cash or an Interac e-Transfer. Just know that these payments are between you and the seller: ShopBroker doesn't hold the money or offer refund protection on them. Card and PayPal payments stay protected. See Paying in Person with Cash or Interac e-Transfer.

Can I use Apple Pay or Google Pay?

If the seller has Stripe connected, Apple Pay and Google Pay may be available through Stripe's payment form. Check at checkout to see what's offered.

What if I want to pay with PayPal but the seller is using Stripe?

Reach out to the seller and ask if they can switch their active provider to PayPal. Each seller can switch instantly from Settings > Payments.
