Understanding Verification Requirements

What you need to verify your account and start selling

Written by Austin Headley

Why We Verify Sellers

Verification protects everyone in our community. When buyers see you're verified, they know:

  • You're a real person

  • Your identity has been confirmed

  • You can receive secure payments

This builds trust and helps you sell faster.

How Verification Works on ShopBroker

Verification happens through your connected payment provider, which can be PayPal or Stripe. Each provider has its own verification flow, and ShopBroker mirrors their status so buyers see whether you're verified at a glance.

PayPal Verification

When you connect PayPal, verification is handled by PayPal directly. You'll see your status on the PayPal card in Payments > Settings:

  • Email confirmed: You've confirmed the email on your PayPal account

  • Can receive payments: Yes: PayPal cleared you to accept payments

  • Connected: Both checks are complete

PayPal handles its own KYC (Know Your Customer) checks behind the scenes. If PayPal needs more information, you'll see a yellow attention banner on your PayPal card with what to fix. For details, see PayPal Account Problems.

Stripe Verification

When you connect Stripe, Stripe runs identity verification. This typically involves:

  • Personal information: Name, date of birth, address

  • Government ID: Driver's license, passport, or ID card

  • Selfie match: Quick photo to match your ID (sometimes required)

  • Bank account: Used for receiving payouts

Stripe verifies through:

  • Account details confirmation

  • Small test deposits (which you verify)

  • Or instant verification through your bank login

For details, see Stripe Account Problems.

How Long Does It Take?

Most verifications complete within minutes. Occasionally it takes a bit longer if:

  • Additional documentation is needed

  • ID quality needs improvement

  • Manual review is required

You'll get email updates from your provider on your status.

Verification Status Meanings

The status you see on your Payments > Settings card maps to your provider's check.

For PayPal:

  • Not Connected: No PayPal account linked yet

  • Verifying: PayPal is reviewing your account

  • Incomplete: Something's missing

  • Connected: Ready to receive payments

For Stripe:

  • Not Connected: No Stripe account linked yet

  • Setup Incomplete: You started Stripe onboarding but didn't finish

  • Action Required: Stripe needs more information

  • Under Review: Stripe is reviewing your details

  • Connected: Ready to receive payments

Common Issues and Fixes

ID Photo Problems (Stripe)

Make sure your ID photo is:

  • Clear and not blurry

  • All four corners visible

  • Not expired

  • Matching the name you entered

Address Mismatch

Your address should match what's on your ID or recent utility bills.

Bank Account Issues (Stripe)

Double-check your account and routing numbers. Typos are the most common cause of delays.

Email Not Confirmed (PayPal)

Visit paypal.com/businessprofile/settings and click the email confirmation banner. Once confirmed, your status updates the next time you reload Payments > Settings.

What If I'm Stuck?

If verification is taking longer than expected:

Check your email for any requests from PayPal or Stripe

Go to Payments > Settings (click your profile picture, then Payments, then the Settings tab)

Click Open PayPal Dashboard or Manage in Stripe to see what's needed
